Scanning the room makes you less trustworthy. Most speakers are taught to look around the audience, so they sweep their eyes from one side of the room to the other like a lighthouse. In the video I show why that kills trust. Nobody in the room ever feels spoken to. Everyone feels glanced at. Instead, pick one person. Speak to them until you reach the comma in your sentence, then move on to somebody else. Always move on a pause, a comma or a full stop, never in the middle of a thought. Why does it work? Because a sentence delivered to one person feels like a conversation, and conversations build trust. The rest of the audience sees you genuinely connecting with someone and reads you as sincere. Scanning, by contrast, looks like you are checking the exits. It also slows you down in the best possible way. Every pause becomes a natural breath, a moment to let the point land and let your gestures finish before the next line begins. This takes practice, because the lighthouse habit runs deep
